Following the success of the R&D project that delivered SF6-free MV solutions up to 24 kV, the next frontier lies in higher-rated systems. The world is increasingly becoming electric and digital to support decarbonization efforts as part of climate action. This means exponential growth of renewable generation, eMobility, bigger electrical loads. To meet this growing demand—particularly in renewable energy applications like wind and solar (PV) farms—it is essential to develop SF6 alternatives for 36 kV systems. These designs must maintain the same size, functionality, and performance while catering to both primary and secondary distribution applications.
LIFE36kV is a paneuropean R&D project managed in collaboration with Schneider Electric industrial centers in  France, Spain, and Germany to deliver this innovation. With a total budget of €3 million, supported by a €1.8 million (60%) financial contribution from the EU, this initiative aims to deliver sustainable, high-performance solutions to align with the climate action imperative, while expanding on capabilities in the face of greater demand for electricity and massive renewable generation.
